Das Forscherteam um Dr. Martin Lehnert, Prof. Dr. Maximilian Röglinger und Johannes Seyfried freut sich über die Annahme seines Beitrags „Prioritization of Interconnected Processes – A PageRank-based Approach“ im Journal for Business & Information Systems Engineering. Im Beitrag entwickeln die Autoren eine Methode, die Prozesse hinsichtlich deren Verbesserungsbedarfs priorisiert und dabei Abhängigkeiten zwischen den Prozessen berücksichtigt.

 

Abstract des Beitrags:

Deciding which business processes to improve is a challenge of most companies. The literature on business process management (BPM) offers numerous approaches that support process prioritization. These approaches, however, have been characterized either as too high-level to be useful or such detailed that the mere identification of critical processes requires significant effort. Moreover, existing approaches to process prioritization share the individual process as unit of analysis. They determine the need for improvement of individual processes mostly based on performance indicators and neglect how processes are interconnected. So far, process interconnectedness is only captured for descriptive purposes, e.g., in process model repositories and business process architectures. Prioritizing processes without catering for their interconnectedness, however, may substantially bias process improvement decisions. What is missing are process prioritization approaches that consider both the processes’ individual need for improvement and their interconnectedness. To address this research problem, we adopted the design science research paradigm and developed the ProcessPageRank (PPR) that ranks processes ac-cording to their network-adjusted need for improvement. To do so, the PPR draws from process performance management and business process architectures as well as from network analysis, particularly Google’s PageRank, as justificatory knowledge. In order to evaluate the PPR, we validated its design specification with a panel of BPM experts and implemented the design specification as a software prototype. We also challenged the PPR’s usefulness and applicability, conducting an in-depth interview with a BPM expert from a global online retailer.
